Africa Now: Fashioning Personhood

Africa Now: Fashioning Personhood” challenges conventional ideas of African aesthetics and identity and also celebrates the wide circulation of ideas and influences that characterize the work of young African artists and designers. Their innovative contemporary work highlights the international reach of the African continent, featuring the rich exchange of African creativity with global cultures, periods, and styles.

The Nkoyo Dress (named after Ituen’s mother) was created in 2008 but made its runway debut in 2009. As a key piece this elegant offering became the defining essence of the innovative and spirited ‘Ankara and Beads’ collection. The collection earned Ituen Basi the ‘Most Innovative Designer 2009’ award at the Arise Africa Fashion Week in Johannesburg. For its unapologetic, colourful, fun, bold and contemporary aesthetic the label was affectionately dubbed 21st century African.
